This Cookie Policy supplements the Privacy Policy of the website nicastro.in (“Site”) and is provided under Art. 122 of the Italian Privacy Code (Legislative Decree 196/2003), the Italian Data Protection Authority’s Guidelines of 10 June 2021 on cookies and other tracking tools, and Articles 13 and 14 GDPR. It fully replaces the previous version dated 30 May 2022. Version 2.1 adds section 2.4 on Amazon affiliate links.

1. What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that a website saves in your browser when you visit it. On your next visit the browser sends them back to the site that created them (first-party cookies) or to another site, when the page embeds third-party content or services (third-party cookies). They are used, for example, to remember a choice you made, to recognise a browser between visits, or to measure and personalise advertising.

Technologies similar to cookies include browser local storage and device identifiers. In this Policy, unless stated otherwise, “cookies” also covers these technologies.

Cookies fall into two groups:

technical cookies: necessary to operate the site or to provide a service you explicitly requested (including remembering your consent choice). They do not require consent;
profiling and advertising cookies: used to build a profile of your interests and show you ads in line with it, or to measure ad performance. They require your prior consent.

2. Cookies used by this Site

2.1 First-party cookies

The Site sets no cookies of its own. There are no accounts, sessions, forms, saved preferences or analytics tools. The browsing language is determined by the page address (for example /it/, /fr/) and is not stored in your browser. Typefaces are hosted on the Site’s own server: no request is sent to Google Fonts.

If you connect from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, on your first visit the Site shows a consent management banner (a consent management platform provided by Google, Google-certified and compliant with IAB Europe’s Transparency & Consent Framework v2.2). To remember the choice you make, the platform saves the following cookies on the Site’s domain:

These cookies are technical: they exist to honour your choice and avoid showing the banner on every page. They do not require consent and are set even if you reject everything. The banner is shown again 6 months after your last choice in any case.

The Site displays ads served by Google AdSense (Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland). Google uses cookies and identifiers to select, display and measure ads and, if you have given consent, to personalise them based on your interests.

In the EEA / UK / Switzerland these cookies are set only after you have given consent in the banner. If you reject or make no choice, Google sets no profiling cookies; the Site may still show non-personalised ads, based solely on the content of the page.

Durations are those declared by Google at the time this Policy was published. You can delete these cookies at any time from your browser (section 5).

2.4 Amazon affiliate links (no cookies set by the Site)

Some pages of the Site (books and resources linked to books) contain purchase links to Amazon with an affiliate identifier (Amazon Associates program). These are ordinary hyperlinks: the Site sets no cookie at all when you click these links. Once you reach the Amazon website, Amazon itself may set its own cookies on its own domain, under its own cookie policy — not the Site’s.

On your first visit from the EEA / UK / Switzerland the banner offers three options, all equally prominent:

Accept: you consent to advertising cookies and ad personalisation;
Reject: no profiling cookie is set; at most you will see non-personalised ads;
Manage options: choose purpose by purpose and vendor by vendor.

Closing the banner without choosing, continuing to browse or scrolling the page does not count as consent.

You can change or withdraw your choice at any time through the “Cookie preferences” link in the footer of every page of the Site, which reopens the preferences panel. Withdrawal takes effect immediately for the future and does not affect the lawfulness of processing already carried out. The banner is shown again 6 months after your last choice in any case, or earlier if purposes or vendors change.

4. Google advertising settings

Independently of the banner you can:

manage Google ad personalisation from your Google account: adssettings.google.com;
opt out of behavioural advertising from many operators: www.youronlinechoices.eu.

5. Managing and deleting cookies in your browser

You can block or delete cookies, all of them or only third-party ones, from your browser settings. Instructions for the most common browsers:

For other browsers, see the vendor’s official documentation. Blocking third-party cookies does not prevent you from browsing the Site.

6. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy, for example if the services used or the cookies set by Google change. Each version shows its effective date and last-updated date at the top. In case of substantial changes the consent banner will be shown to you again.
